The campaign posters of President Goodluck Jonathan which flooded the streets of Abuja on New Year day tends to be opening a new chapter in the country's political discourse.  In this report, GEORGE AGBA raises pertinent questions regarding the veracity of claims by both the presidency and the opposition as to who the real brain behind what may have appeared to be another New Year gift to Nigerians could be.

Since he was sworn in on May 29, 2011 as president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan's presidency has been confronted with ill-luck every first day of each year. On the two occasions his tenure in office have had to witness its entrance into a new year, it has been a tale of the president of Africa's most populous country in the shadow of his citizen's fury.

Missing N1bn IGR: Delta fires Union, Diamond bank

The sledge hammer, yesterday, fell on two banks - Union Bank and Diamond Bank, as the Delta State Government blacklisted them as revenue collection banks in the state for what it described as unethical banking procedures. Besides, the state government, through the Delta Board of Internal Revenue (DBIR), called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to investigate the affected banks to establish, if standard banking procedures are followed in their dealings with customers funds.

Virgin Atlantic announces new chief executive

Virgin Atlantic has announced that American Airlines executive Craig Kreeger will be its next chief executive.

Mr Kreeger will take up the job on 1 February, replacing Steve Ridgway, who is retiring after 11 years.

The news comes a month after US carrier Delta Air Lines bought Singapore Airlines’ 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic for $360m (£224m).

UNIBEN Prof announces alleged cure for HIV/AIDS

Prof. Isaiah Ibeh of the University of Benin, on Tuesday announced the development of a new drug that can possibly cure HIV and AIDS.
Isaiah Ibeh, who is the Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences of the university, announcec the development of a new drug that can posibly cure HIV and AIDS.
He told reporters in Benin that the herbal drug had undergone 'series of successful tests'.
He said 'We are at the threshold of making history, in the sense that we seem to have with us something that will permanently take care of what over time seems to have defied all solutions. 'We are talking about the latest discovery of an oral drug made from plants extraction in Nigeria for the possible cure of the pandemic, HIV and AIDS virus.''

Group threatens to sue MTN for poor services

The South-South Youth Leaders' Forum said it had concluded plans to sue a telecoms firm, MTN Nigeria, for continued poor services being rendered to the citizens.The group explained that it would not remain silent and watch MTN deliver substandard telecoms services to the South-South people and Nigerians in general.

In LONDON, United-Kingdom, January 9, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- acquitted two Cameroonian men jailed for "looking gay" because they wore women's clothes which exposes the systematic discrimination against perceived homosexuals in the country, Amnesty International said today as the pair's convictions were overturned by an appeals court.
Jonas Kimie and Franky Ndome have spent more than a year in prison following their arrest outside a nightclub in the capital Yaoundé in July 2011. They are among numerous people in Cameroon who have faced persecution for their perceived homosexuality.
