First batch of Dangote graduate drivers to complete training January
10:53 am
The scheme was launched in November at the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT).
The Director-General of the Institute, Alhaji Aminu Yusuf, disclosed this in an interview with in Abuja on Monday.
He said 2,000 graduates of various disciplines were expected to be trained under the scheme to become professional truck drivers.
Yusuf explained that the training would be done in batches of 100 participants on quarterly basis over a period of four years which would end in 2016.
He said the institute was carrying out the training in conjunction with the Federal Vehicle Inspection Officers and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).
“These graduates, which include women from the Dangote Group, will undergo a three -month training because they have no knowledge of driving before being certified as drivers.
“They have graduated from different universities but have never driven vehicles before.
“After being certified as drivers at the end of the training, they will be licensed immediately.
“These drivers will be different from other drivers because they are not illiterates and their training is sound,’’ he said.
According to him, the Dangote Group drivers will be taught theoretical and practical training which includes orientation, simulation and test track driving before being exposed to highway driving.
He said the institute was focused on achieving its mandate to provide human capital development in the transport industry.
“It is our inherent duty to provide human capacity for the entire transport industry through training and retraining, orientation skills and development and professional training.
“We feel that we should extend our services to lower cadre especially our middle level and top management training institute.’’
Yusuf added: “But because of frequent demands from organisations for customised training programmes for drivers, we have now designed and customised such programmes.’’
He recalled that the institute, before the Dangote Group project, used to train an average of 300 drivers yearly.
Yusuf said the institute was being funded by the government to develop its staff abroad in rare fields of knowledge which was not available in Nigeria.
Yusuf was recently conferred with the Dr Kwame Nkrumah African distinguished Public Service Order of merit Award 2012.
The award was instituted after the former Ghanaian President and foremost Pan-Africanist, whose life time was synonymous with unparalleled virtues, achievements and service. (NAN)
New electricity tariff coming soon – NERC
2:04 am
ABUJA — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has announced impending review of the newly deployed Multi-Year Tariff Order, MYTO.
It said this was necessary following a series of complaints from electricity consumers, especially Small and Medium Enterprises, about high fixed fee they must pay every month irrespective of the power situation within any particular month.
Executive Commissioner, Government and Consumer Affairs at the NERC, Dr. Abba Ibrahim, confirmed this to newsmen on the sideline of Power Consumers Assembly in Dutse, Jigawa State by the commission.
Abba said having received the complaints, the commission had put a process in motion to resolve the complaints of the SMEs, adding that the new tariff regime provided for review mechanism in case of such complaints.
He said: “There have been quite a number of complaints that have been raised. MYTO in itself has a mechanism for review. It is a multi year tariff order that has safety guards within it. Wherever there are issues raised by customers or even a service provider, the commission has the responsibility to sit down, listen and review where necessary.
“MYTO already has a six-month window for regular reviews. Also within it, if there are complaints regarding the implementation of the tariff order and the complaints were brought in within sixty days of its deployment, then the commission is also obliged to sit.
“We have had complaints from commercial operators, specifically, Small and Medium Enterprises, complaining about high fixed charges, equivalent to industrial categories. It is a complaint that was laid and met these criteria for review within 60 days of the MYTO order. We are now in the fifth month of the implementation of the tariff.
“These complaints were made within the 60 days of implementation and we have sat down with all the stakeholders. My chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi, is meeting with the National Association of Small and Medium Enterprises on this particular issue as we speak. We have consulted the distribution companies. We have met severally and we are in the process of addressing this particular issue.
“So it is a review that is already being taken care of. It is unfortunate that some particular group has suffered this long but I can assure you we are putting all efforts to ensure that this is redressed.”
DISCOs must provide meters to all customers
He also insisted that the distribution companies across the country
must provide meters to all customers in the next 13 months as ordered by
the regulatory agency in June.Abba said: “We are insisting on that. It is an order of the commission. It has not been withdrawn. An order is an order. We are operating a rule-based sector now. We believe that with the coming in of private operators, they will even be more aggressive in terms of revenue drive.
“One of the success stories is what has happened in Dutse. Our team had monitored the metering in Dutse and they report that over 60 per cent of the areas they had covered have prepaid meters already installed. They were also installed free of charge as ordered by the commission since June 1 and this is what we expect throughout the whole country.”

Makau denies links to Nairobi drugstore
Isaac Twumasi-Quantus, AfricaNews Reporter in Accra, Ghana
World
marathon record holder, Patrick Makau, has rubbished reports linking
him with a Nairobi clinic alleged to be supplying banned substances
including blood booster EPO.
“I personally have no knowledge if the story has any validity, but I know that nothing in it has anything to do with me. The story falsely associates me with a particular retail store (located in the Hilton Hotel, Nairobi) and claims that I am a direct customer.
“This is not correct. I have never been on the premises. The only thing in that shop that suggests that I have anything to do with the store is an old national newspaper clipping with my photo taped to the wall, together with many other clippings of other athletes’ races,” last year’s Berlin Marathon champion said.
“Absolutely false is the claim that I patronized a clinic in Kapsabet. I have never even been in that town. For the sake of clarity, the shop located in the Hilton Hotel is, to the best of my knowledge, the only shop in Kenya which imported USN brand nutritional supplements (USN is a South African company with offices in Europe, including Germany and UK.).
“There have probably been hundreds of athletes that have bought USN products there. The USN product that I have used in the past is Recovery Max (a powered isotonic drink mix),” Makau added.“From time-to-time I have asked someone going into Nairobi to buy a Recovery Max for me. Of course, before using USN product for the first time, my IAAF AR, Mr. Zane Branson, wrote to USN to confirm their products safety/compliance with WADA List.
“In addition, an email was also sent to the IAAF medical department asking if they have ever received any warnings and/or complaints about USN products and the answer came back negative, a simple ‘No.’”
“I find it surprising that this non-story has surfaced in English just a day before the BMW Frankfurt Marathon and I felt a need to make my case clear, especially as I have vast respect for the organizers, for BMW as a title sponsor, for Adidas, and all joggers, runners, spectators and volunteers and all individuals and institutions that have invested in the BMW Frankfurt Marathon.
“I am looking forward to a great event on a proven course and I will be racing with a clear conscience,” Makau concluded. In the Athletics Illustrated story, Seppelt cited Makau and Beijing Olympics champion, Pamela Jelimo as clients of the clinics in Nairobi
Nigeria: Joseph Benjamin in Rumour Mills Saga - 'I Never Said I Married My Wife Out of Pity'
Joseph Benjamin recently granted an interview to an online radio
presenter who asked why he married his wife; a woman who is now
separated from him and Joseph said he married her after she got
pregnant, because he didn't want to have children out of wedlock, this
is one statement he now pays with a heavy price as rumour mongers have
fled to town with their own versions of the story.
Barely minutes after his interview was aired and shared by other eavesdropping online blogs, Joseph was "mis-interpreted" on social networks and entertainment blog headlines with quote "I married my wife out of pity - Joseph Benjamin"
The actor is furious and has stepped out on social networking site Twitter to bark at this headline.
Here are his tweets
Below is the text of the actual conversation
What really happened in your marriage?
"I was married for 8 years. It was a rather odd situation at that time. She got pregnant and I didn't want to have a child out of wedlock and so I married her so we could build a home together, even though we had given birth to the first child.
Things weren't rosy then, but I believed it was the right thing to do for the sake of the child. I overlooked my own personal desires, I just wanted to do right. Our second child came and I stood by my family like I always have; but no one is perfect, we had our issues - the crisis persisted but we stayed because of the kids. But you never make that kind of decision because if the parents are not happy together then the children suffer."
Many say he did the damage by answering this question, this way.

Ethiopian Airlines orders aircraft for $276m
Ethiopian Airlines orders aircraft for $276m
Ethiopian Airlines has ordered an
additional 777-200LR aircraft valued at $276 million from Boeing,
bringing the number of similar planes to six. The Addis
Abba-headquartered carrier is to add an additional aircraft to its
fleet, less than two months after two plane crashes in Ghana and Nigeria
notched up the question of aviation safety in Africa.
"The 777-200LR has been a fantastic airplane for Ethiopian Airlines," Tewolde Gebremariam, Ethiopian Airlines chief executive said in a news release. “This additional airplane will let us take full advantage of the performance and economics of this great airplane."
The 777-200LR carries more passengers and more revenue cargo farther than any other jetliner and is capable of connecting virtually any two cities in the world nonstop, Boeing said on its website.
"Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines have been partners for more than 65 years and we've seen the airline grow to become a leader in African aviation and beyond," said Van Rex Gallard, vice president of Sales for Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The airline continues to invest in its fleet to grow the airline, increase profitability and provide the best products in the sky for their valued customers."
Ethiopian Airlines was the first African airline to operate the 777-200LR, the first to order the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with an order for 10 and the first to order the 777 Freighter.
The airline currently operates an all-Boeing fleet of 737, 757, 767 and 777 airplanes in passenger service and a 757, MD11 and 747 in cargo operations.
The Ethiopian carrier is one of Africa’s largest carriers, competing with South African Airways and Kenyan Airways.
A limited number of African carriers are allowed to fly into the European Union and United States over “safety" concerns.
It is expected that the new order by Ethiopian Airlines will some how simmer the safety matters that keep denting Africa’s airline industry
Banks will scrape the N100 Atm charge
Nigeria:Banks will soon scrap the N100 ATM charge-ACAMB
Lagos — The Association of Corporate Affairs Managers of Banks, ACAMB, has said that banks were not relenting in the bid to stop charging customers N100 for using other banks' ATMs.
Its President, Mr. Tunde Shofowora, said in a statement in Lagos yesterday that modalities were being perfected to stop the N100 charge.
"Banks are in the process of working out the modalities with ATM third party service providers to aid the scrapping of the N100 charge," he said.
The decision to stop the charge was taken at the Bankers' Committee meeting on Nov. 13.
Shofowora urged banks to speed up the process, promising customers that the rough edges would be perfected in few days.
He also urged merchants, traders, supermarket owners and proprietors of filling stations to ensure that their transactions were e-payment compliant with their Point of Sale (PoS) terminals.
According to him, every bank in the country is promoting electronic payments and increasing availability, reliability and security of electronic channels for business transactions.
Shofowora said that e-banking would discourage heavy cash usage and help to reduce money laundering and crimes fuelled by too much cash flow.
He advised that Nigerians should begin to imbibe the culture of electronic transactions.
"E-banking will make it as easy as possible for customers to transact their businesses from any location and provide transaction convenience to customers because it is strategic to moving the economy forward.
"The ability to cash money from the closest bank's ATMs will make a big difference to any bank's customer.

By OPEOLUWANI OGUNJIMI
After his widely publicised break up with his ex- wife, Toni Payne, a few years ago, ‘Gongo Aso’ crooner, otherwise known as Nigerian hook man; 9ice, never ceased to be in the media for the wrong reason. One time, he was accused of having a baby out of wedlock, and at another time was rumoured to have reconciled with Payne. But in this interview, 9ice addresses some of these controversies surrounding his career. He also speaks on his separation with former manager, Dehinde Fajan among other issues.
It’s been a while since we last heard from you. What’s happening to your career?
I believe I don’t have to stick to just music. For that reason, I’ve been involved in other projects. Of recent, I featured in a movie where I played a major role and that took us a lot of time.
I also travelled to shoot four of my videos in the UK. I’ll be releasing those videos as a compilation in a few weeks. I shot the video for my singles Attitude and 3310 from my latest album, Bashorun Gaa. I also shot videos for Get Into It and Ike Kan.
What are those four videos all about?
Like I said, those videos will be released as a compilation and I titled them Obawon, Ikekan, Get Into It and I Dare You.
People have been asking the motive behind such songs and I told them that they’re meant for the festive period, for people who love to party.
The songs also help us to reflect upon those things that happened in our lives all through the year.
The four singles are also meant to wet the appetites of the fans for my next album coming out in March 15 next year. But before then, the Alapomeji All Star album will drop in December.
You are known to make statements with your songs. Are the new singles directed towards someone?
If you’ve noticed that for a while, I’ve been quiet in the industry. It’s not over until it’s over. So, we need to keep the brand going.
Obawon is meant to let people know who is 9ice. I want to use the song to reframe my identity and privileges in the industry.
‘I Dare You’ is a phrase used by a lot of Nigerians. So, I’m daring some people to say one or two things about me. I want reactions from people.
So what happens if the people eventually react?
Then I will react again by speaking out my mind.
What are the concepts behind your new videos?
They are historical videos. I’ve realised that not everybody will understand what I mean by ‘Ike Kan’. So, the video explains what it means. Same applies for ‘Get into It’. The videos were directed by Musa, the same guy who directed Wizkid and Wande Coal’s latest videos. We are releasing the four videos together as a compilation CD with a concert to accompany it.
What’s the concert all about?
The concert is meant to create publicity to our fans. We want to give them a taste of what we are about to release in the compilation, so they can go buy it. We believe the concert will go a long way in putting it in the mouth of people. Other Alapomeji artistes like Seriki and Alabi will be on ground to support me.
When is the concert coming up?
It will be in second week of December but no specific date yet. It will take place at Civic Center. The concert is basically for industry people and the press as well. It will be strictly by invitation.
What is the title of your on-coming album?
My tradition is to release the title of my album long before it is released because I don’t believe in secrecy. I’m releasing a double album like the last one I did. One is ‘CNN’ while the other one is titled ‘GRA’. Each is going to come with eight songs making a total number of16 songs. The full meaning of GRA is Galvanizing Right Ahead and the other one is Cancelling Numerous Negativity (CNN).
What inspired the two titles?
There has been a lot of negativity about me of late. So I’m using one to cancel all negative stories about me spread by my enemies. The other is a charge to move ahead no matter what have been said about me.
Apart from the new materials you are about to release, what are the other projects you are working on?
We are working on the Alapomeji All Star album and that will be released next year.
How many artistes do you have signed on to Alapomeji at the moment?
We have the likes of Seriki, Alabi, Kayefi and another one coming.
What’s happening with Kayefi’s album, fans are worried because they feel it should be out by now. Why the delay?
The reason why her album is being delayed is because she just got married and she’s raising her kids too. We have to be considerate about her challenges until she is fit for production.
There is this rumour that you just joined a new record label known as Diesel Music, how true is it?
That’s not true. The owner of Diesel Music is a friend of mine. So, I was just helping him to promote his label, that’s all.
There’s been a lot of negative stories spread about you. How do you react to them?
I don’t feel bad reading negative stories about myself. In fact, I enjoy them and long for more. The fact that people talk about me means that I exist. In fact, both negative and positive stories work well for me. It depends on how you can cope with it, live with it, get over it and move on. Whoever is having it negative now, should expect it positive later and whoever is having it positive now, should expect it negative soon too. The most important thing is deal with it and get on with your life.
What actually went wrong between you and your former manager, Dehinde?
Something doesn’t need to go wrong before two people decide to go their separate ways. There is always a point in someone’s life that you think you need to move on. That was what happened. I still work with him .
You haven’t reacted to the story that your Abuja based lover had a set of twins for you. Is it true?
I wish the press would verify their stories about me before publishing them. Nobody had any baby for me. That story is not true and I want to tell you that they are making it up.
Is it true that you and Tony Payne have reconciled and are back to your house at Magodo?
That story isn’t true. Tony Payne and I are still separated and not back together. That is the fact!
You recently featured in a movie titled Jejere, what was the experience like?
The truth is that I am no longer interested in featuring in anymore movie. That might be my first and the last outing. You sit down at home, watch them and criticize them but there’re so much more to it than what we see. Imagine shooting a movie for over a month and you are supposed to edit it to an hour. It’s much more difficult than we imagine.
How would you describe your experience on set?
I was there for about a week, in different locations. They shot in different cities and places. It was difficult, quite difficult and at the same time, very challenging. That is going to me my first and last movie except if I’m being offered a huge sum of money then, I can cancel other events for like two weeks for a movie shoot.
Weren’t you planning to shoot your own movie?
I was supposed to shoot my own movie but while working on ‘Jejere’ and I saw the way is being done, I decided to drop that idea for now. My intention was to shoot my own movie, which is suppose to recapture the true story of 9ice.
What is your opinion on the current state of the Nigerian music industry?
I think we are getting worst instead of getting better. What we dished out is not quality. What we have now is quite different from the way it all started. I would say it’s better we go back to the days of Plantashun Boiz.
What do we have now?
Do we even have song now? What we have now is the beat. Aside that, there is no content regulation .We have been saying that we should go back to the drawing board. The first thing is to get PMAN right. Once we get PMAN right with the artistes of this generation participating actively in PMAN activities, the body will be able to represent all the musicians and fight for our collective and individual rights.
